New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday outlined India’s big reform push while also celebrating the country’s rising achievements in space exploration. Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2025 in the capital, Modi said his government is committed to “reform with full commitment,” despite political disruptions.

Parliament Session & Big Reforms

“The monsoon session of Parliament has just ended, and you can clearly see the continuity of reform,” the Prime Minister said, highlighting the major bills passed in recent weeks.

Among them was the Jan Vishwas Bill 2.0, which he described as a landmark move for “trust-based and pro-people governance.” Modi also confirmed a long-awaited update to India’s outdated income tax law, making it simpler for citizens.

The PM revealed significant changes to laws on mining, shipping, and ports, pointing out that many of them dated back to the colonial era. These reforms, he said, will strengthen India’s blue economy by boosting port-led growth.

GST Overhaul Before Diwali

One of the most anticipated announcements was the upcoming GST 2.0 reform, which Modi promised will be in place before Diwali this year.

“A big reform is also being done in GST. This will make GST easier and prices will also come down,” he assured.

The new system is expected to replace the current multi-slab structure with just two rates—5% for essentials and 18% for most other goods. The move aims to simplify compliance and lower household costs.

India’s Growing Space Power

Modi also highlighted India’s strong progress in space exploration. He proudly said the country has completed over 60 space missions in the last 11 years, with many more planned.

In a key announcement, he revealed that India has achieved space docking capability, a vital step toward the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission.

“This is a big achievement for our future missions. Now India is preparing to send its astronauts to space through Gaganyaan, and in this, we are going to get a lot of help from the experience of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla,” he said.

Sports Policy & Global Trade Challenges

Turning to sports, Modi said the government is developing a new National Sports Policy to build an entire ecosystem around India’s sports economy and prepare athletes for major global events.

On the global stage, India faces fresh challenges as US President Donald Trump recently announced an additional 25% tariff on all Indian goods, effective August 27, over India’s continued oil imports from Russia.

Despite these trade tensions, Modi projected confidence:
“India, which follows the mantra of Reform, Perform, Transform, is today in a position to take the world out of slow growth,” he said.

The Prime Minister concluded by stressing that his government isn’t chasing small changes but “a quantum jump” in reforms.
“Reform is neither compulsion nor crisis-driven for us. This is our conviction,” he added.
