DigiLocker solves this by acting as an official digital document wallet, but a lot of users only ever use it to store a scanned Aadhaar copy without realising how much more it actually does.

What DigiLocker Actually Is

DigiLocker is a government-backed digital storage platform where documents issued by registered organisations — UIDAI, state transport departments, education boards, and a growing list of other agencies — can be fetched directly from the issuer's own database into your personal digital locker. Because these are pulled directly from the source rather than uploaded as a scan by the user, they carry the same legal standing as the physical original for most official purposes under India's IT Act.

This distinction matters: a document you've manually scanned and uploaded yourself sits in a different category ("uploaded documents") than one fetched directly from an issuing authority ("issued documents"), and it's the issued category that carries full legal equivalence.

Setting Up an Account

Registration requires your mobile number (linked for OTP verification) and, for full functionality, your Aadhaar number for identity verification. Once verified, you set a security PIN or use biometric login on the mobile app, which protects access to your stored documents going forward.

Fetching Government-Issued Documents

Inside the app or web portal, there's a search function where you select the issuing organisation (for example, UIDAI for Aadhaar, your state's transport department for a driving licence, or your board for mark sheets) and enter the required reference details — often your document number and some identity-matching information like date of birth. If the details match the issuer's records, the document is fetched directly into your locker as a verified, issued document.

Commonly available documents through this route include Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, vehicle registration certificate, various education board mark sheets and certificates, and an increasing number of state-specific documents like caste and income certificates as more state departments integrate with the platform.

Uploading Your Own Documents

For documents not yet available through direct issuer integration, DigiLocker also allows manual upload of scanned copies into a separate "uploaded documents" section. While useful for personal organisation, keep in mind these don't carry the same automatic legal equivalence as issuer-fetched documents, since there's no verification against the original issuing database.

Sharing Documents Digitally

Once documents are in your locker, sharing them doesn't require printing or emailing a scanned copy — DigiLocker generates a shareable, verifiable link or QR code for specific documents, which the recipient can use to confirm authenticity directly against the issuer's record rather than trusting an image file that could theoretically be edited.

This is increasingly accepted by airports for boarding with a digital driving licence or Aadhaar in place of a physical copy, by some educational institutions for admission verification, and by various government service counters that have adopted DigiLocker verification into their process.

A Practical First Session

  1. Register with your mobile number and complete identity verification using Aadhaar.
  2. Set a strong PIN or enable biometric login for the app.
  3. Fetch your Aadhaar, PAN, and driving licence (if applicable) first, since these are the most commonly requested documents.
  4. Fetch education certificates and mark sheets from your board if available, particularly useful for job applications and further admissions.
  5. Review the app's sharing settings so you understand how to generate a shareable link or QR code before you actually need one urgently.

Why It's Worth Setting Up Before You Need It

The common mistake is only discovering DigiLocker exists at the exact moment a physical document is lost, damaged, or simply not on hand — at an airport, a verification counter, or during a rushed application. Setting it up in advance, with your core documents already fetched, turns a potential emergency into a non-issue, since the documents are already verified and accessible from your phone whenever they're needed.
